GEEK TIP: Fun Facts About Drinking and Hang Overs!

geek-tips-how-to-avoid-a-hang-over

I know this geek tip is a little bit too late for those holiday drinking and all, but just in case anyone is planning to drink tonight as their last hurrah before officially starting the first week of the New Year at work or school, well here’s a few tips you guys might want to remember. Keyword: Remember. By the time you’re on your 2nd glass or so, remembering might be a problem, hehe.

1. MYTH: Mixing different alcoholic drinks will give you a worse hang over than drinking one kind of liquour the whole night.

I’ve heard that excuse before (actually I’m guilty of it, hehe), “I don’t want to mix drinks!” when we try to have some shots going around. But the fact is, mixing alcoholic drinks is okay. It doesn’t make your hang over worse. What makes your hang over worse however is the QUANTITY of alcohol you intake. The more alcohol you drink and the more dehydrated you become, the worse hang over you’ll get.

2. MYTH: Red wine is healthier and will not give you a hang over.

It’s true a glass of red wine is good for you, but if you drink red wine in large quantities, it will give you a worse hang over compared to drinking gin and vodka. For one thing, gin and vodka usually gets mixed with a mixer like soda. Wine is usually drank as is, unless you drink Sangria.

3. FACT: Eating salty food will help decrease your chances of a hang over

Hang over is a bad case of dehydration. As we keep drinking alcohol and we pee it out, we become dehydrated and the salt or sodium in our body is depleted. Eating salty food will help in the rehydration therefore making our hang overs more manageable.

4. FACT: Remember the 3-2-1 rule before you sleep.

3 glasses of water, 2 Advils and 1 vitamin C before you sleep will help you in your hang over. The water hydrates, the Advil will help ease the headache and the vitamin will help elevate sugar and sodium levels.

5. FACT: Alternating a glass of water with a glass of alcohol will help in preventing a bad hang over.

Like I said, hang overs are a case of dehydration. If you keep hydrating yourself with water while drinking, for sure there’s less chances for you to get a hang over. Plus, it’s cheaper, too! You’re cutting your alcohol intake by half so that means that less the amount of glasses or shots to pay for, hehe!

6. MYTH: ‘Hair of The Dog’ will cure your hang over.

‘Hair of the Dog’ is a phrase referring to treating your hang over the next day by drinking another glass of alcohol. It’s true that your nerves might get soothe by another glass of vodka, but once your liver breaks down the alcohol and realizes that it has additional toxins to deal with, your body will eventually experience the symptoms of a hang over again. ‘Hair of the Dog’ is just delaying the inevitable. So the best thing to do, is keep on rehydrating yourself with a glass of water or Gatorade to replenish and normalize your body’s electrolyte and sodium levels!

Well, see, there’s nothing geekier than being a ‘responsible’ drinker and trying to analyze hang overs, hehe! Hope you enjoyed the fun facts and try to keep them in mind when you go out for drinks!
