What comes to mind when you hear the word “laser”?
For me, when I hear the word “laser”, the following comes to mind: “pew pew”, Star Wars, lightsaber, space ships, Dr. Evil from Austin Powers (giant quote-unquote laser) and well, hair removal.
But never “facial”. I could never associate the word “laser” with “facial”.
So imagine my surprise when I heard that Wink Laser & Wax Studio offers a facial service that uses laser technology.
(Either I’m behind on beauty technology or I’m totally clueless because I’ve never heard of laser facial before. Have you?)
When Wink invited me to try out their services at their newly opened branch in Alabang Town Center, I decided to try out their Laser Facial instead of their hair removal services.
For one thing, I’m not a hairy person. (thank God… and my parents!)
I only get a wax (half-leg area) every 2 months or so, and the occasional bikini/Brazilian wax when we’re headed for the beach.
The Laser Facial was more up my alley as I’m very vain when it comes to my face. I obsess a lot about my skin all the time and am always on the look out for products and services that will help me keep my skin look younger and feel younger.
(Sadly, I’m not THAT young anymore. Believe it or not, I’m past 30 and wrinkles are starting to show! Argh!)
So yeah, a kikay day involving lasers… how geeky is that? Definitely count me in!
How Does Laser Facial Work?
Before I go on with my experience at Wink, let me explain how a laser facial works.
Laser Facials (also known as Photofacial or Photorejuvenation) is a skin treatment that uses light-based technology to treat blemishes, broken capillaries (the spider-like veins on your face), facial redness and boost collagen production.
There are two kinds of laser facials: LED and IPL. Since Wink offers an IPL-based photo facials, I’ll be concentrating on that.
IPL (Intense-Pulsed Light) facials work by delivering a blast of light at very high levels through a hand-held device. The intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin and leaves the outer layer of the skin unaffected.
This means there’s no pricking involved and it practically has no downtime. This means you can immediately put on basic skincare and light makeup on your face a few hours after your session.
My Laser Facial Experience at Wink Laser & Wax Studio
So off I went to Alabang Town Center, bare-faced, with no trace of makeup whatsoever aside from moisturiser. Liberating as it was, I was hoping that I wouldn’t bump into anyone I knew, haha.
(I’m pretty comfortable with my skin, but come on, at least give me my eyebrows!)
And since the Universe loves me so, I did end up bumping into the boyfriend of one of my barkada. Thankfully, guys aren’t really that observant and I probably looked the same to him as any other day.
Anyway, Wink Laser & Wax Studio ATC is located at the ground floor of Commerce Mall, above Makati grocery.
I honestly had a hard time looking for Wink in ATC. I consider ATC as my second home so I was a bit dumbfounded to find myself lost. I actually had to consult the Concierge as to where Wink exactly was.
For the southie geeks out there, Wink ATC is in the Designer’s Boulevard area. You’ll find it in the little alleyway past the automatic doors. It’s actually very well hidden, haha.
I entered Wink and was greeted by their very friendly staff. I told them I was there to try out their laser facial service and they asked me if I was a first-time customer of Wink.
I said, yes, and then they handed me an iPad.
After signing up, I was introduced to Ericka and was ushered into one of the rooms.
Ericka asked me if I was wearing any makeup and I told her that I only applied moisturiser. I was hoping she’d tell me not to wash my face but she still told me to wash.
So geeks, if you’re planning to have a laser facial session, skip the makeup! You’ll save some time as you’ll need to wash it off anyway.
After washing my face, we then started with the consultation and a quick orientation.
She asked me the following questions:
- Am I pregnant? No.
- Do I use any whitening products or skin care products with Retinol? No.
- Am I prone to keloidal scarring? No.
- Am I photo sensitive, or am I sensitive to light? No.
- Do I have diabetes? No.
- Do I have a history of epilepsy? No
- Have I undergone any tanning session or have I been exposed to the sun for long periods of time? No.
After asking me those pre-treatment questions, she then proceeded to explain what laser facial is, what it does and its benefits.
Aside from the benefits I’ve mentioned above, laser facials can also help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. (Yay for me!)
The consultation and orientation was quick and lasted more or less 5 minutes or so.
After the consultation, it was time for the facial proper!
I hopped onto the bed, lay down and wore my goggles. Ericka then proceeded with applying cooling gel all over my face. Cooling gel is needed as the laser can get quite warm, bordering on hot.
After applying cooling gel, Ericka started with the session. She started pressing the hand-held device on various areas of my face and would blast light very quickly. She always gave me a heads-up when she would actually shoot the laser so that I won’t be startled.
I couldn’t count the number of times she said “Close your eyes. Ready” in her cute sing-song voice. Probably the best advice, as the pulsing light can come as a surprise.
Some websites (if you do your research) say that you can experience a sensation of a flicking rubber band on your face during a laser facial. However, I didn’t experience that at all. It was virtually painless for me and the only sensation I felt was warmth on the area where the laser was fired.
The whole procedure took around 15 – 20 minutes. It was super quick!
After the laser facial, Ericka then told me to wash my face, apply sun block and we’re done!
After-Treatment: What to Expect
There weren’t any notable reactions after the treatment, really. My skin pretty much felt the same as it did before the treatment, although a lot more refreshed. No negative reaction and neither was there any redness.
There was a slight (very, very, VERY slight) itching but I think it was due to the fact that I only applied sunblock and not moisturiser so my face felt a little dry.
(I’m not sure if the sunblock they had was also a moisturiser.)
As this was my first session and the laser level they used was the lowest one, I didn’t really expect a huge change on the condition of my skin.
Although the day after, my skin felt plumper than usual and my pores seemed smaller.
And on second day after my laser facial, I received a pleasant surprise on my phone.
I really appreciate excellent service like this as it’s very uncommon nowadays, sadly. I’m definitely giving Wink Laser Studio’s customer service a big thumbs up! Two thumbs up, even!
Not into Facials?
If you’re not into facials, don’t forget that Wink Laser Studio offers hair removal services as well. Not just laser hair removal but also traditional hair removal using wax.
The prices of their waxing service are reasonably priced and it’s actually cheaper than the place I normally frequent for my waxing needs. I’ll definitely have to try out their waxing service soon.
So geeks, if you’re from the south, like Alabang or Parañaque area, do pass by Wink Laser Studio in Alabang Town Center and try out their services.
Since they recently opened last June, they currently have opening specials which you can avail of, such as discounts and promos. :)WINK LASER & WAX STUDIO Alabang Town Center G/L Commerce Mall Muntinlupa City +63 917 633 5326 / +63 2 553 7384
I’m scheduled to have my 2nd laser facial session in 2 weeks and I’m pretty excited. I hope to see more visible results this time around.
Stay tuned to my blog if you’re curious about Wink’s laser facial! :)
