Is The Philippines Ready For 4G Broadband Technology?

If you haven’t noticed, Wi-Tribe 4G banners and posters are all over the place. Well, here in the southside of the Metro anyway. Like for example yesterday when we were southbound on SLEX, I saw around 4-5 banners of this so-called Wi-Tribe 4G along the highway.

I remember asking my fiance, “So how is it better than 3G?”

And my fiance said, “It’s supposed to be faster.”

Well, whoop. I probably gave blankest stare you’ll ever see. Practically ALL broadband providers claim that they’re the fastest in the market so I wasn’t entirely all impressed with this idea of a 4G broadband. For one thing, can our country’s IT infrastructure EVEN handle this kind of technology?

So being the doubtful geek that I am, here I am googling “Wi-Tribe 4G”. I have to admit, all those posters have had me intrigued. At least their marketing works, if at all!

According to Wi-Tribe, here are the facts about 4G:

wi-tribe uses 4G because it is the future of broadband technology the entire world is moving towards.

4G (Fourth Generation) is the class of technologies that delivers hi-speed broadband and multimedia services and applications.

In contrast, 3G is voice technology that is being used for some internet applications like small screen applications and casual surfing.

And more facts:

  • 4G is broadband that delivers true wired speeds without wires.
  • 4G is faster because it has more bandwidth.
  • 4G is completely portable so you can enjoy it in your office, so you can bring it to your favorite coffee-shop, or your favorite hang out.
  • 4G is 3 times faster than 3G technology.
  • 4G is the preferred broadband technology that will give you the richer, pleasurable internet experience you truly deserve.

You should see my face now. If skepticism had a face, it would be mine. Very big words, but I wonder if there’s any truth to it. To be honest, I don’t know of a single person who has actually tried Wi-Tribe. Do you? Have you?

My fiance and I were wondering about it the other day actually. How come I haven’t heard of any reviews of Wi-Tribe? I personally think it’s because they aren’t offering free trials. That’s my guess. Wi-Tribe subscription costs Php998/month. And I THINK, when you sign up with them, you’ll need to sign up for a 24-month subscription. Basically a 2-yr lock down.

Would you want to be stuck paying for something that you’re not sure of for 2-years? No, I didn’t think so.

Unless someone I personally know says that I can play WoW with less than 100MS and I’ve seen it with my own eyes, I won’t be switching anytime soon. Whatever was written on the Wi-Tribe website hasn’t impressed me so far! So for now, I’m sticking with PLDT myDSL.

Come on, Wi-Tribe, you can do better than that! Show me what 4G Broadband technology is ALL about.
