Geek Lust: iPad Mini or a Kindle Paper White?

It’s that time of the year again when I start lusting over a gadget. This phenomenon normally occurs when June is just around the corner because June is *ahem* my birthday month.

(I make sure I give the husband enough lead time to purchase my gift… hahaha!)

Earlier in the year, I was lusting over a Kindle Paper White.

I actually own a Kindle.

kindle3It was the hubby’s birthday gift 2 years ago. It’s one of my favourite gifts since I love to read books. But lately, I’ve been getting quite frustrated that I can’t read in the dark.

My Kindle is the 6″ e-ink model and doesn’t have backlight yet.

Of course, there’s always the cheaper alternative of just purchasing a reading light or purchasing the Kindle cover with light. (Kindle cover still a bit expensive at around $50, though.)

But the Kindle Paper White is so pretty… it’s just too tempting!

Lately though, I’ve been thinking of getting an iPad Mini instead.

I never liked the iPad because I just found it too heavy and too big.

(I would rather use my iMac or MacBook Air if I wanted to just surf the internet. When I’m out, my iPhone is enough for my needs.)

But the iPad Mini seemed just right.

I was thinking that if I’m going to retire my Kindle, I might just get an iPad Mini as it will be more useful. I can install apps on it and use for other things aside from reading.

I could EVEN start reading manga and comics on it, too! *epiphany*

Then there’s the question of which iPad Mini to get. Should I get just the WiFi model or get the 4G one?

While I can argue that I can always share the hotspot from my iPhone 5, there’s the other argument of how insanely fast hotspot sharing can drain one’s battery.

With Smart’s announcement of their iPad Plans on the 18th of May, I might just go for an iPad Mini 4G on Smart! 😉

I’m really happy with Smart’s LTE when I’m on the go. It’s fast and always available in most places I venture to.

This is the fastest speed I’ve gotten so far, but I’ve seen faster speeds up to 20+Mb/s from other people.

    Both!

    Ahem.

    If you currently have an iPad, it would be better to get the Kindle Paperwhite. Think of the eyestrain you’d get trying to read on the iPad. 🙂 The Paperwhite is much kinder to your eyes. 😀

    I’d probably sell my old iPad and get an iPad Mini when Apple releases one with Retina. 😀

    I don’t have an iPad yet. I never got attracted to the iPad craze. I can’t imagine carrying it around. So heavy!

    One reason why I want the Kindle Paperwhite… easier on the eyes!

    Go for the mini. I didn’t really use my iPad out of the house so much because it’s heavy and bulky, kind of defeating the purpose of having a portable tablet. Now I have the mini and it is so so convenient and the size is just right to be perfectly handy. I have one and it’s nearly eliminated my use of my laptop. My sister has a kindle and both she and I like the functionality of the iPad mini.

    Better yet, get a Kindle now, then wait for the next iteration of the Mini. 😀 maybe by then Artie wouldget the hint and get it for you.
