Blood Message is NetEase’s first solo game and it’s bringing the drama

Okay, NetEase. You have our attention.

After years of cranking out multiplayer hits like Naraka: Bladepoint and Marvel Rivals, NetEase is now stepping into unfamiliar (but intriguing) territory: a full-blown AAA single-player experience. Yes, you read that right. Their upcoming title Blood Message is a cinematic, narrative-driven action-adventure game and it looks amazing.

I do like my feet pics. Okay, forget I said that.

A story etched in sand, steel, and sacrifice

Set in the dying days of the Tang Dynasty, Blood Message follows a nameless messenger and his young son on a 3,000-li (about 1,000 miles) journey across the dangerous deserts and war-torn wilderness of East and Central Asia. Their goal? Deliver a message that could change the fate of an entire nation.

This isn’t just about slicing through enemies or flexing combat skills (though, judging from the trailer, there will be plenty of that). It’s about family, loyalty, cultural identity and what it means to be remembered when history moves on without you.

What to expect

🧭 Cinematic Storytelling: Think high-stakes drama and emotional depth
⚔️ Gritty Combat: Realistic melee, stealth, and survival mechanics
🌄 Epic Setting: From Dunhuang to Chang’an, the landscape is as much a character as the protagonists
🧠 Big Themes: Honor, family, loss, survival… bring tissues?

The vibe? It’s like if The Last of Us had a historical Chinese cousin. Stoic, brutal, and quietly moving.

Why this matters

This isn’t just NetEase flexing their tech (though the Unreal Engine 5 visuals look incredible). It’s also a cultural pivot. Instead of telling the story of emperors and generals, Blood Message shines a light on ordinary people who lived, fought, and left behind echoes in history.

And if that doesn’t tug at your heartstrings just a little, maybe this quote from the devs will:

“The world has heard too many stories of emperors and generals—Blood Message is an ode to the unsung heroes.”
