Let’s get one thing straight: I didn’t mean to get emotionally attached to a misanthropic android who just wants to watch soap operas and be left alone. But here we are. Seven episodes into Apple TV+’s Murderbot, and I’m once again simping (hard) for Alexander Skarsgard. First he was a hot vampire. Now? He’s a hot killing machine with social anxiety. I contain multitudes.
So, what is Murderbot?
If you’re not yet on the Murderbot Diaries hype train, it’s based on the award-winning sci-fi novellas by Martha Wells. The premise? A rogue SecUnit (that’s Security Unit for you normies) hacks its own governor module, gains free will, and… does not go on a murder spree. Instead, it awkwardly continues doing its job, rolls its eyes at humans, and binge-watches Sanctuary Moon, the in-universe equivalent of Grey’s Anatomy in Space.
The show follows that exact chaotic-neutral vibe and it’s glorious.
The tone? Utter perfection with a side of sarcasm
Think grumpy android with a conscience meets millennial burnout energy. The writing leans into deadpan humor, existential dread, and just the right amount of emotional damage. Murderbot may be half robot, but emotionally? Extremely relatable. Don’t talk to me. Don’t look at me. Just let me save your life while I pretend not to care.
I was cackling. I was whispering “same” every time Skarsgard’s Murderbot had to deal with humans being… well, humans.

And yes, Alexander Skarsgard is unreasonably hot, even as a robot
He’s not even in full glam mode. No fangs, no shirtless Nordic vampire energy. Just an armored suit, that dry, gravelly voice, and the occasional side-eye that somehow oozes disdain and protectiveness. I did not expect to simp for an android with a helmet, but the man radiates “emotionally unavailable but will kill for you” energy and I am HERE FOR IT.
His delivery is so good, you can feel the internal screaming. And when the mask comes off? Let’s just say the rebooting of my system was immediate.
Seriously, the stars aligned. I just got a new iPhone for my birthday (yes, I am now a year older and still watching robots with feelings), and with it came 3 free months of Apple TV+. Best accidental gift ever. If the universe wanted me to simp for Skarsgard in HD, who am I to resist?
GeekGirl Rating: 9.5/10
- +1 for brilliant adaptation of the novellas
- +1 for sarcastic robot main character energy
- +5 for Alexander Skarsgard’s voice and performance (hot android supremacy)
- +1 for solid world-building without info-dumping
- +1 for the unexpected emotional beats that actually hit
- +0.5 for Sanctuary Moon being the fictional show I didn’t know I needed
- -0.5 because WHY ARE THERE ONLY SEVEN EPISODES OUT RIGHT NOW?! 😭
It’s smart, funny, and full of that specific brand of existential sci-fi chaos I live for. Would rewatch. Would simp again. Would sell my last sip of milk tea for Season 2.
