Captain Planet is coming to Netflix! Maybe he can fix EDSA flooding next?

Because if this week’s baha wasn’t a cry for help, I don’t know what is.

So… while we’re still bailing out floodwater from Emong, Dante, and the habagat tag team of 2025 (seriously, three weather systems in one week??), Netflix casually drops news that Captain Planet is making a comeback. And for real, the timing couldn’t be more poetic.

That’s right. The OG eco-hero with the green mullet, blue abs, and zero chill for pollution is officially getting a live-action series. Not a movie. This was originally planned as a film but Netflix decided the planet’s mess probably needs more than 90 minutes to clean up.

Valid.

Wait, what is this again?

If you’re a ‘90s kid like me (yes, ’90s, hee hee), you probably remember Captain Planet and the Planeteers. That gloriously preachy, Saturday morning cartoon where five teens from around the world used their elemental rings (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart) to summon a floating, environmentally woke superhero who could laser beam toxic waste with a side-eye.

Now it’s being rebooted for streaming, with Leonardo DiCaprio (yes, the climate change Leonardo, not Titanic Leo, although same guy) producing the series through his company Appian Way. Also in the producer chair: Greg Berlanti, the guy behind the CW’s superhero multiverse (Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, he knows his capes).

And writing the series? Tara Hernandez, whose work includes Mrs. Davis, Young Sheldon, and The Big Bang Theory. So expect meta humor, sharp writing, and hopefully some globally relevant (and locally relatable) storylines. Give me a typhoon-themed episode and I’ll scream.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • It’s going to be a TV series (not a movie anymore)
  • It’s coming to Netflix
  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Greg Berlanti are producing
  • Tara Hernandez is writing and executive producing
  • No casting or release date yet
  • Glen Powell, who was once attached to star, is no longer part of the project

So why now?

Captain Planet was way ahead of his time.

He was tackling pollution, climate change, and greedy corporations before it was cool (or mandatory). And after a week of non-stop rains, flooded roads, and weather alerts that felt like boss fights, we could use a little planetary intervention.

This reboot is coming at a time when environmental issues aren’t just school projects anymore. They’re our literal reality. And while we’re used to Pinoy resilience and wading through waist-deep water like it’s Tuesday, it’s also nice to imagine a green-haired himbo flying in to yell at corrupt systems and save us from drowning in our own trash.

Will it be cheesy?

Of course. But you know I’m still going to watch it, preferably while curled up on the bed during yet another storm, clutching my emergency snacks and yelling “Go Planet!” every time he appears.

So yeah. Recycle your plastics, bring your own tumbler, and stay tuned.

Because the power is yours… but a little Netflix never hurts.
