Southies, remember Mingoy’s? If yes… you’re ancient. (Kidding. Kind of.)

If you grew up in the South, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Mingoy’s Restaurante especially if your parents were the type to drag you to Spanish-themed family dinners back in the day. And guess what? Mingoy’s is back at Evia Lifestyle Center, and yes, they’ve still got the paella game on lock.

A little bit of nostalgia (with garlic on top)

We dropped by Mingoy’s the other night and ordered what I like to call the “throwback sampler”: Paella Negra, Gambas al Ajillo, Calamares, Lobster Bisque, and of course, the OG Beef Salpicao.

The Hits: Paella, gambas, calamares, and bisque

Everything was delicious. The paella negra was rich and salty in the best way, with just enough squid ink to stain your soul (and maybe your teeth).
The gambas had that classic buttery-garlicky combo that makes you reach for bread even if you’re low-carb.
Calamares? The crispiness was just right. Light and golden without being greasy. I only wish the batter had been a bit fluffier. But that lemon garlic sauce? Perfection.

The miss (but not a dealbreaker)

The only thing I wasn’t wowed by was the beef salpicao. Still tasty, but the beef could’ve been more tender. You know that moment when you expect buttery-soft beef cubes but get a bit of a jaw workout instead? That.

Worth the drive (or delivery)

Still, it was a great meal overall. Familiar, comforting, and flavorful. Definitely worth checking out if you’re feeling nostalgic or just want solid Spanish-Filipino food in the South.

You’ll find Mingoy’s at the ground floor of Evia Lifestyle Center, open daily from 10AM to 9PM. Or you can be a hermit and order via Foodpanda. No judgment.
